It was Rahm Emanuel who infamously said, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” In year one of Obama’s reign the Democratic party took that advice to heart by giving freebies to all their liberal friends and allies under the guise of an economic “stimulus.” They then coordinated a UAW theft of GM and Chrysler and are taking the first steps toward Obama’s signature socialist goal — the eventual nationalization of health care. Forgotten among this whirlwind of activity is a plan to enact a carbon tax. No, they certainly aren’t wasting the opportunity they’ve been presented.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, Americans haven’t been fooled into thinking that the donkey party has their interests at heart. For instance, we don’t believe the stimulus was effective. Referring to a poll taken by New American Media Sergio Bendixon said, “The American public currently believes that the stimulus package has not had a major impact on the national economy. [...] Only African-Americans believe that President Obama’s stimulus package ‘has made the economy better.” Further, the average citizen believes the proposed health care legislation will cost more and provide less. The result is a free-fall of support for Democratic Party programs and Democrats in general. This past November saw the Republicans pick up two governorships. Over the past few days three prominent Democrats announced their pending retirement. Why? Because it’s becoming more and more likely that Republicans will route Democrats in the upcoming 2010 mid-term elections.
The Republican brand is in resurgence as evidenced by a Rasmussen poll released this week. In it, generic Republicans out-poll Democrats by a 9-point margin, 44% to 36% – a shift of 15% compared to a short 12 months ago. A crisis for Democrats? Perhaps. One would think they’d retreat from their progressive agenda. I predict the exact opposite. Faced with a possible loss of the House and a weakened position in the Senate in 2011 it’s just as likely that they’ll ram through Congress while they can all the programs that the far-left wants to become reality. It’s likely we’ll see even more closed-door crafting of legislation, backroom deals, and graft to holdout legislators. It’s going to be an interesting year.
